How it works
Thermography, or thermal imaging, is the analysis of infrared radiation energy. As electrical and mechanical components wear or deteriorate, their thermographic intensity steadily develops, radiating more heat until inevitable failure. Regular monitoring of equipment allows customers to detect both electrical and mechanical faults at an early stage before they cause failure.
What can we detect using thermal imaging?
A thermography survey can locate and identify potential problems in electrical and mechanical equipment, steam systems, refrigeration systems and underground piping networks before they cause failure.
Infrared thermographic inspections are ideal for electrical inspections and are Eastway’s most common thermography survey, normally carried out on a bi-annual or annual basis. As electrical connections become loose, the resistance to current causes an increase in temperature.
If left unchecked, this heat can cause connections to melt which may result in a fire. An electrical thermal imaging survey can quickly identify the following faults:
- Loose connections
- Undersized cables
- Load imbalance
- Overload condition
- Faulty breakers
When mechanical components become worn and less efficient, for example as a result of improper lubrication or misalignment, the quantity of heat emitted will increase prior to failure. For mechanical equipment, infrared thermographic data can be used very successfully to complement vibration analysis. It will assist in detecting the following faults:
- Bearing wear
- Gear wear
- Lubrication issues
- Over or under tensioned belts
Eastway have an experienced team of electricians, electrical engineers and certified thermographers carrying out their regular thermal imaging inspections to the highest standards.
